Tampa TV Station Swipes at Detroit As Rays Trade Pitcher David Price

July 31, 2014, 6:40 PM by  Alan Stamm

The Fox network news station in Tampa took this nasty poke at Detroit in a tweet that it yanked about 90 minutes later.

Shortly after the Tampa Bay Rays traded lefty pitcher David Price to the Tigers in a three-team deal, WTVT suggested in a Thursday afternoon tweet to 40,600 followers that he's heading from a seaside resort to a crumbling slum that looks like a war zone. Aaron Foley of Detroit Jalopnik captured the evidence, as did Sporting News, Bleacher Report and Sports Illustrated, which calls it an "awful Detroit joke" in the headline..

The shot, retweeted more than 300 times, drew critical comments on Fox 13's feed -- where this went up an hour and 45 minutes after the original:

Rob Visconti of Milford, who originally commented "Stay classy, Tampa," replies "Not accepted" under the second tweet.

Another critic, using a screen name, predicts the station will "soon have a new job posting for Social Media Manager."

At Yahoo Sports, David Brown writes:

Not original or funny, just mean-spirited and misleading. In fact, St. Petersburg, Fla. (where the Rays play) doesn't compare as well to Detroit as Fox 13 might think when it comes to crime. And if you've ever actually been to Detroit, and interacted with the people who work and live there, you'd never consider hurting their feelings like this.
