Commercial Activity Picks Up in Downtown Birmingham

There was a time when downtown Birmingham was a popular, upscale destination with little competition along the Woodward corridor.

Then things became challenging. Downtown Royal Oak started to surge in popularity. Jacobson's department store shut in 2002 and the downtown faced challenges filling stores as Somerset Collection became a growing competitor. 

These days, things are trending upward for the downtown section.

Charlie Ramirez of The Detroit News writes:

Birmingham’s downtown is looking more like a boomtown.

Several new retailers, restaurants and real estate developments are cropping up or set to open in the area in the next few months.

Experts said the influx of new businesses is the result of the city’s efforts to recruit retailers and make downtown more attractive to shoppers. The upswing in the local economy is helping.
