Now the civil litigation begins.

WWJ reports that the family of Detroiter Renisha McBride, 19, — the woman who was shot and killed by a Dearborn Heights homeowner Theodore Wafter— filed a $10 million, wrongful death lawsuit against Wafer Tuesday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Wafer, 55, was recently convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting. He testified during trial that he was scared and feared that someone was trying to break in his home.

“The criminal justice system found him guilty of second degree murder, and he will be sentenced; and in the criminal law he will serve his time and be accountable for those acts,” said McBride family attorney Gerald Thurswell, according to WWJ.

“In addition to that, he took a life and we are seeking civil damages for the value of Renisha’s life,” he said.
