WXYZ Opens Glass-Front Studio In Chase Building On Woodward

August 28, 2014, 10:07 AM

WXYZ is joining the migration downtown with a new studio in the heart of the central business district.

WXYZ tweets a photo from Friday morning's announcement at a building nicknamed "The Qube."

The glass-enclosed, outward-facing studio will be in the lobby of Chase Tower at 611 Woodward Ave, a Friday statement says.

When the new WXYZ streetside studio opens this fall, with stunning views of Woodward Avenue and Campus Martius Park, it will be the home of 7 Action News at Noon with Joanne Purtan. The studio will also quickly become a familiar sight in other WXYZ Channel 7 and TV20 Detroit programming, as well as both stations' digital platforms.

The sidewalk-view space is similar to studios used by the Today Show and other network morning programs. WXYZ plans to interact with passers-by and set up a temporary platform for outside segments, just as the national shows do.

WDIV is based several blocks west of Woodward at West Lafayette Boulevard and Second. Fox 2 is in Southfield.

WXYZ's first TV broadcast was Oct. 9, 1948, from its studios inside the Maccabees Building located on Woodward and Putnam, near the Detroit Institute of Arts. The station's main studios will remain in Southfield, where they have been since the late 1950s.
