The New Hockeytown: No Tarot Card Readers, Pawn Shops Or Topless Joints Need Apply

September 16, 2014, 12:32 PM

New details of the $450 million new home ice for the Detroit Red Wings unveiled this week outline everything from the footprint of the arena, the number of residences that could be around it and types of businesses not wanted in the area,  Louis Aguilar reports in The Detroit News.

The neighborhood that will arise around the hockey arena is northwest of Comerica Park on the west side of Woodward Avenue.

Authorized development: Dry-cleaning establishment, brewpub, residential, hotel, exhibition hall, offices for professional or medical, health club, restaurant, retail

Unauthorized: Pawn shops, warehouse operations, businesses that involve firearms or hazardous materials, bail bondsman services, topless club, alcohol/drug rehabilitation clinics, psychic or tarot card reading businesses.

Next week, Aguilar reports, Olympia Development of Michigan is going to “launch” the arena district, according to an Olympia Development invitation. That presumably means work begins on the site just north of downtown. The arena is expected to be finished in summer 2017.
