Part II: Kevin Dietz Poses as a Homeless Beggar

September 23, 2014, 8:37 AM

Kevin Dietz of WDIV continues his undercover report on homelessness in Detroit, standing out at a freeway service drive with a sign: "Hungry Please Help[."'

He said he made about $4 an hour. Most drivers ignored him. A homeless guy gave him a half-full bottle of water.

"The man didn't want anything and he didn't stay to chat," Dietz reports. " He just saw that I didn't have water, so he gave me his. I immediately noticed another homeless man coming with a sign and learned that I was on his corner. I was a little afraid, thinking he might fight for his turf, but he didn't."

"He asked me how long I planned on staying at the corner and to tell him when I was leaving so that he could take over at the busy corner. I went back to begging. It was hot, dirty and humiliating work, and I wasn't making much money."

Another homeless man came along, saying Dietz was on his corner. The guy asked how long he'd stay there because he wanted to take over when he was done.

One driver pulled up and gave him $5. The guy said he goes around town giving away money, according to the broadcaster.

Dietz says the series will next look at the plight of homeless women and the challenges of trying to find work.
