Kirk Gibson and Alan Trammell, stars of the Detroit Tigers 1984 World Series team, were fired Friday by the Arizona Diamondbacks from their respective jobs.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports Gibson, 57,  who had been the team manager since 2010, was fired just a few games short of the end of a disastrous season for the team, which had lost 96 games this season.

He was dismissed right away. Trammell, 56,  the bench coach, was fired, but will stay on to manage the team for the last three games.

The newspaper reported that Diamondbacks Chief Baseball Officer Tony La Russa said his conversation with Gibson on Friday was "the hardest one so far in 30 years of sending guys to Triple-A or releasing them."

La Russa said Gibson was fired before the end of the season because he had told Gibson he would tell him as soon as  he reached a decision.
