Congress Hopeful Dave Trott 'Borders on the Far Right' -- Oakland Editorial

September 29, 2014, 10:20 AM by  Alan Stamm

After a closer look at a U.S. House nominee it backed earlier, the monthly Downtown Birmingham/Bloomfield magazine switches to the Democrat running for Rep. Kerry Bentivolio's seat.

"We are just not convinced Trott's views are representative of the majority of district residents," says an editorial in October's issue. The suburban publication endorsed Trott in last month's 11th Congressional District primary on he Republican side, when he easily beat the first-term Tea Party incumbent.

Now it switches to Democrat Bobby McKenzie for the Nov. 4 election

We think his conservative and inflexible position on many issues borders on the far right, including his attacks on the departments of education and energy, along with the Environmental Protection Agency.

And we are not convinced he has taken the time to talk to those in the district's trenches as opposed to just espousing talking points that appeal to a GOP minority faction."

Bobby McKenzie: "His views are more in sync with local residents."

As an example of objectionable positions, the editorial by Publisher David Hohendorf cites Trott's "flat-out opposition to Common Core educational standards which most school superintendents in the 11th District support."

The Downtown Publications commentary, posted at the last editorial page of this online "flipbook," says McKenzie shows "more of a willingness to listen and not just push, unabated, his personal opinion.policy differences."

His views are more in sync with local residents in this sprawling district, be it a woman's right to determine her own reproductive health care, national educational standards that allow for local initiative in terms of reaching goals, or the necessity of reaching across the aisle to get things done and break the current Washington logjam created by extremist factions in both political parties.

The commentary is among nine ballot recommendations spanning races for Congress, the state Legislature, county commission district court and two local proposals.
