What Has Recess, Absence Checks, Hard Seats, Misbehavior -- And Isn't School?

In some senses, Detroit's 36th District Court is a bit like school. It has those things in the headline, and state judicial authorities in Lansing got quite an education from looking at behavior there.

One result is a closer look at attendance and punctuality, just as we all were scrutinized closely at a mischief-prone age. WWJ has details, via AP:

Attendance is being taken at Detroit’s long-troubled 36th District Court. . . . The Michigan Supreme Court wants regular updates on the court, which was recently returned to local management after severe financial problems and other woes were fixed.

The reports will cover much ground, from caseloads to finances. The court also must disclose the daily arrival time and attendance of judges.

The downtown court was found "to be rife with financial mismanagement, a severely backlogged docket and bloated payroll" by the National Center for State Courts, the station notes.
