The Free Press' pick for who should succeed Sen. Carl Levin is no surprise, though flavorful language garnishes Sunday's endorsement.

Gary Peters, a Democrat, is praised as "a hard-working and highly effective member of Congress."

"This contest produced an epic mismatch between Democratic Rep. Gary Peters, an established and reasoned voice on the Hill, and Republican Terri Lynn Land, a former Michigan Secretary of State who failed to articulate a coherent case for her election," an eight-paragraph editorial says bluntly.

Her platform and advertising in this campaign suggest she possesses little more than the most rudimentary grasp of the complex issues that are debated in the nation's highest legislative chamber. In addition, Land's campaign has been cagey and elusive with the public and the press. Remarkably, Land, who received the Free Press endorsement during her 2006 run for Secretary of State, refused to participate in the paper's endorsement process — the first time any major-party, statewide candidate has done so.

The paper praises Peters as "a hard-working and highly effective member of Congress, and someone whose competence and independence have already been tested several times by a changing electorate and a broad array of political foes. He is primed to become an influential" senator.
