Mayor Duggan Wants Chief James Craig to Stick Around After Orr Leaves

October 30, 2014, 7:20 AM

There was always speculation that Detroit Police Chief James Craig would be fired once Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr, who hired him, left the city.

But all that speculation came to an end -- at least for now -- when Mayor Mike Duggan said Wednesday that Craig would remain chief after Orr's departure, WDIV reports.

"We're talking long term," Duggan said, according to WDIV.

Both Craig and Duggan appeared a little giddy over the news.

Duggan's informal announcement came before roll call for Angel's Night patrols on Wednesday night.

Craig says he may buy some real estate now.

"I love the west side," he said. "I love the east side. I live on the east side now, but you know I got to navigate back home. I think that's what my parents want me back on the west side."
