Highland Park and Hamtramck Follow Detroit and Take Inventory of Blighted Properties

October 31, 2014, 6:40 AM

The cities of Hamtramck and Highland Park are joining Detroit in taking inventory of blighted properties.

Louis Aguilar of the Detroit News reports that the cities are undertaking their first comprehensive attempts to count the number of blighted properties within their boundaries.

Aguilar writes:

Both municipalities have lost tens of thousands of residents and are pocked with burned-out homes and abandoned buildings. Empty structures became havens for crime and squatters, and caused property values to plummet.

All one has to do is go down Woodward Avenue or Second Street in Highland Park to see the blighted homes and commercial buildings. In fact, it seems indistinguishable from Detroit except for the fact the street signs in Highland Park are blue as opposed to green in Detroit. -- Allan Lengel
