Carl Taylor of MSU on Bill Cosby: ‘Give Him Some Room to Breathe’

Social media discussions about Bill Cosby are a trending topic that seems unending. Commenters with a wide-angle view include Carl S. Taylor, a noted MSU sociologist. This is adapted with permission from a recent Facebook post.

Our folks are all over Cosby. Slow down, stop piling on the elder. He has been through a great deal, and looks worn, conflicted and broke-down.

Can you not look into this poor man eyes and see his pain? It is awkward anytime an icon is found to be human. If he is guilty, so be it. He must pay for his transgressions, as all will.

But why put this in the public laundry? Cease making such painful revelations a soccer game. So many accusers are out now it makes me wonder how Cosby did anything besides rape.

If Cosby is a rapist, it is difficult to prove after decades. In any event, after all the work he has done on behalf of good causes, children and more, he’ll be remembered for being a possible rapist.

We know about going through something both as individuals and as a community. We can be more understanding. We can be kinder. We have enough room for those who have been harmed by his actions. We have the power to wait.

Neither Condone Nor Condemn

We have waited for months for an injustice process in the death of a young teen. Now we are piling on without facts being considered. We are allowing Bill Cosby to be stomped and disgraced.

I neither condone nor condemn. I am not his judge. I pray for a healing of all. I am praying for peace, a sense of harmony.

No court, not even the court of human opinion, has heard all the facts – and probably never will.

If he is guilty, is paying the price now with such a humiliation that is more deserved of a murderer.

Please, take a honest good look at Bill. He is a shell of what he once was. A hard-looking 77-year-old black man who represented much more than an accused rapist.

Ravaging Vultures

Rape is a much more complex, complicated charge than a drive-by media rumor. The media monster, the ravaging vultures, must have something to chew on. Go back and chew on the injustice of Trayvon, settle this injustice of shooting Mike Brown. Settle the death of public education.

There are many things Bill has said, written and done I don't favor. I was not happy to see him prostituted in the Detroit debacle of public education vs emergency manager politics. I hated his method of trying to talk about poverty. I absolutely was sick as Bill became entangled in a great deal of devilish politics by the Money Elite.

Whether you hate him or love him, give him some room to breathe. Respect his wife and family. Stop gloating over his fall from grace.

Remember that Bill Cosby has contributed a great deal to society that was good. It is shameful if the charges are true. His legacy will be damaged forever.

Yet I can not and will not forget his love of children, his millions of dollars given to black colleges.
