A Touching Story of a Reporter and Stranger Sharing A Holiday Meal Curbside

November 28, 2014, 7:20 AM

Steve Neavling of Motor City Muckraker was at the bus stop at Times Square in downtown Detroit on Thanksgiving when a shiny sedan pulled up and handed a thick paper plate covered with foil to Barney Johnson, 60, who was waiting for a bus. Johnson didn't think he'd get a hot meal Thursday

“Really?” Barney said, looking at the driver with wide eyes.

Barney peeled back the foil to find warm turkey, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, collard greens and an oatmeal cookie.

“What a blessing,” he told the driver and two other people in the car, his eyes misty. “Thank you so much.”

The driver, a well-dressed man with piles of meals to hand out, insisted I take a plate too. How could I not?

Neavling and Johnson then sat down on a cold curb and had a Thanksgiving meal together.

Neavling writes about the conversation they had and the touching exchange.
