A Recurring Question: Are Nude Photos in Detroit's Ruins Art or Exploitation?

December 18, 2014, 1:58 AM

Brian Cattelle, a Florida photographer, certainly isn't the first person to take nude photos in abandoned, distressed buildings in Detroit.

But he's the latest to get local media attention.

Kevin Dietz of WDIV reports on Cattelle's project "BARE USA" and asks: Is this is a true expression of art or is he exploiting the troubles of Detroit?

The Delray Beach photographer describes his work as black and white fine art photography that contrasts natural beauty with manmade decay.“I set a goal to create this project and I’m out doing it,” Cattelle tells WDIV

The BARE USA website describes the project this way:

BARE USA is a black and white fine art photography project that contrasts natural beauty with man made decay.  This contrast is achieved by combining nude photography with urban exploration photography.  In order to capture the great diversity of models and locations, BARE USA will have one shoot with local models in each of the 50 United States.  A book of the resulting collection will be published and available in digital form and hard cover.  Limited edition art prints will also be available.

Dietz reports that Cattelle puts out ads for nude female models, and says he has no problem finding them.

“The end result is like an oasis of beauty amidst all this chaos and destruction,” he said. “Going into an urban decay and taking the clean female form and putting it up against the ruin and decay makes for such an amazing contrast. The art you get out of it is just priceless.”
