It's a matter of perspective.

Roughly 300 homicides is still a lot of murders.

Nonetheless, the good news is that Detroit is on pace this year to have the fewest homicides since 1967, George Hunter of The Detroit News reports.

As of Tuesday, the city had recorded 298 homicides, the fewest since 1967, the year of the infamous riots when there were 281.

This year's tally of 298 marks a 6 percent drop from 318 at the same point last year, the News reports.

The News reports that the lowest number of homicides in Detroit in any of the past 47 years was in 2010 when there were 308.

"It's good news, but we've still got work to do," Detroit Police Chief James Craig said, according to the News.

Detroit's population is about 700,000. New York City, with 8.3 million residents, has 305 homicides as of this week, just seven more than Detroit.

The News reports that other violent crime, including robberies and carjackings are on pace to drop this year.

This year's homicides includes the death of Paige Stalker, a student at the University Liggett School, who was one of four teens shot in a car in Detroit on Monday night in what police say was a botched robbery. There have been no arrests in that case.
