Competition is good.

Ellen Creager of the Detroit Free Press writes that low-cost carriers JetBlue and Spirit airlines are stepping up head-to-head competition at Detroit Metro Airport with new non-stops.

Creager writes:

On April 30, JetBlue will add its second destination from Detroit — a new route to Ft. Lauderdale, with flights as cheap as $49 each way for those who buy tickets by Friday. That happens to be Spirit's headquarters hub. Both Spirit and Delta fly the route already from Detroit.

On April 16, Spirit will add seasonal nonstop service once daily between Detroit and Boston. That is a route both JetBlue and Delta already fly.

Creager reports that as the economy improves, the airlines see opportunity to try and grab more turf from one another.
