Update: Chad Selweski Keeps Macomb Politics Blog After Leaving Daily Paper

January 16, 2015, 1:24 PM by  Alan Stamm

Update, noon Friday: Chad Selweski's latest Poitlcally Speaking blog entry, posted Thursday, is about "the ongoing GOP soap opera starring the party's resident racist, Dave Agema."

In an email Friday, Selweski says he'll continue posting regularly at that Blogger site. "The blog was always associated with the [paper], but it is mine to continue," he explains.

Thursday afternoon article:

Chad Selweski, a veteran journalist who has reported aggressively on suburban Detroit politics and government for three decades, resigned abruptly from The Macomb Daily last week.

The newsman confirms his departure in an email Thursday afternoon, saying only: "Just had my fill after 30 years." At his Facebook page last Sunday, the reporter posted: "I just couldn't take it anymore. So, I bolted."

"Chad's daily contribution to The Macomb Daily online and print editions will be missed," senior news executive Don Wyatt tells Deadline Detroit via email Thursday evening. "Over his 30-year career, he has established himself as the go-to source for information about politics and county governance."

Wyatt, Michigan group vice president of news at Digital First  Media, the paper's owner, adds: "We have plans to fill the position covering county government, though we won't be able to fill his shoes."

Chad Selweski is known for stiletto-sharp commentary.

Selweski, 55, joined the suburban daily in June 1985 at age 26 -- four years after earning a Michigan State University journalism degree. He lives in Macomb Township and now is "striking out on my own as a freelancer, at least in the short term," his message adds.

Selweski lately also covered business and local news for his slimmed-down newsroom. His staff page with photo and contact information remains online as of mid-afternoon Thursday.

At his LinkedIn page, by contrast, the ex-staffer updates his current position to say "freelance political writer." These are among career highlights listed:

  • Covered 98 Macomb County elections
  • Earned 50 journalism awards for the newspaper
  • Played a lead role in numerous projects/series
  • Interviewed numerous national figures, including George H.W. Bush, Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Rudy Giuliani, Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi . . . [nine other names]

Selweski's commentaries regularly were stiletto-sharp, as in this post two months ago:

The people of Warren (and political junkies everywhere) may be treated to the most entertaining mayoral campaign imaginable if Wyoming's own Hawke Fracassa follows through on a delusional plan to challenge Mayor Jim Fouts in 2015. . . . [Fracassa] has been living 1,600 miles away, in Cody, Wyoming, since July.

His Twitter handle -- @cbsnewsman -- prompts questions about when he was in broadcast news. The answer is never, Chad B. Selweski replied in a tweet last July, adding: "What better initials for a reporter?"
