Eastern Michigan President Susan Martin Told: Control Your Boozing Or Else!

The Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents has sent a strong message to school President Susan Martin: Control your boozing or lose your job.
David Jesse The Detroit Free Press, citing a May 17 letter the board sent Martin, reported that the board expressed concern about an outburst by Martin at a recent event in Washington and other unspecified incidents involving alcohol.
“It is, however, incumbent on us to emphasize the severity of this incident and its potential impact on your role and symbol of the university,” said the letter, which was signed by Regents Roy Wilbanks, Francine Parker and Mike Morris. The trio make up the board’s executive committee.
“You must deal with this issue immediately. If there are any further incidents, you will leave us no alternative but to recommend to the Board that your employment be terminated for just cause …”
Martin responded, according to the Free Press, that she had been at an all day event and essentially had a few drinks on an empty stomach. It was that factor, plus a spirited discussion with an alumnus that led to the incident in question.
