Local Singer Taylor Walls Talks About Competing on American Idol
January 27th, 2015, 5:16 PM
This year, American Idol didn't hold auditions in Detroit.
But that didn't stop Metro Detroit singers from traveling to other cities to try out for the show. One such singer is Michigan native Taylor Walls of South Rockwood in Monroe County.
Taylor auditioned last year, but didn't make it past the Hollywood round.
This time, she's made it to the Hollywood round and is still in the game. During the Hollywood round, judges select a group of semifinalists, who compete live on TV. Judges give critiques of each performance and the TV viewers vote for their favorite singers.
Walls goal this time is pretty simple: She wants to win it all.
Wall recently talked to Deadline Detroit's Karolina Powalka.
DD: What’s the Idol experience been like so far, especially compared to what you expected going into the competition?
TW: This experience has been unbelievable! With being a part of Idol last year, it gave me an insight on what to expect this year. I feel as if with this type of competition you have to be prepared for the unexpected. Anything can happen! I am so grateful for everything I have accomplished so far and the friends I have met along the way.
DD: Tell me a little bit about your musical journey so far.
TW: My singing journey began when I first learned how to speak. I would always put on my own "Taylor Walls" concerts, saying that I wanted to be a famous singer when I grew up. Growing up, I sang in church and did many recitals and talent shows. I now still sing at church, with the honor of helping lead worship. I am also a part of a band, Athens Creek. I enjoy singing to all different types of genres, but country is by far my favorite. Who knew that little girl speaking out her dream would one day be able to fulfill it?
DD: Do you have a particular “strategy” for the next round of competition?
TW: I don't have a particular strategy for the next rounds. I'm going to take it one step at a time and give it everything I have. God is in control, so whatever happens, there must be a reason for it.
DD: Aside from winning, what are some things you would like to take away from the competition?
TW: Of course winning is my ultimate goal in this competition, but I also want to make this a learning experience. I'm going to take away all tips and critiques that are being said to me, and apply them to my performances. There is always room to improve. With this experience I will be able to do just that!
DD: What do you think will be your greatest advantage in the competition and what will be a challenge?
TW: I think my greatest advantage would be the drive that I have to go the distance. Doing American Idol last year, and being cut after Solo Round, it fueled a fire inside of me to chase after this dream of mine.
I believe the biggest challenge will be going up against so many other phenomenal singers. Once you get to Hollywood Week, you're not the only big fish in the pond.
American Idol airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8:00/7:00c on FOX.
