Six U-M Fraternities and Sororities Suspended After Ski Resort Damage

January 26, 2015, 4:10 PM

Fallout continues from the craziness of recent vandalism at the Treetops ski resort near Gaylord caused by members of fraternities and sororities at the University of Michigan.

To date, WDIV reports that six Greek organizations have had their U-M chapters suspended.

Last week, fraternity Sigma Alpha Mu announced  that it had ordered a halt to all meetings and activities at U-M, WDIV reported. Over the weekend, the same was ordered for the Sigma Delta Tau sorority, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, Alpha Phi sorority, Chi Psi fraternity and Delta Gamma sorority.

University spokesman Rick Fitzgerald says members of several other fraternities and sororities were involved with damage at Treetops and at Boyne Highlands near Harbor Springs.

[Update:] Here's what suspension by their national organizations means, as reader Linda Hanson of White Lake asked on Facebook:

  • Students can continue living in the houses, but the fraternities and sororities can't hold parties or other events open to outsiders -- including pledge recruiting.
  • They can't participate in university athletic, social or academic functions as a Greek house.
  • They can't vote on Greek life councils or be listed in new directories.
