M.L. Elrick Digs Up Dirt on Candidates for Vacant City Council Seat

January 28, 2015, 10:34 PM

Earlier this month, the Detroit Council narrowed the list of candidates to replace Saunteel Jenkins on the council from 135 to 17.

Council members are interviewing the candidates before they vote on a replacement.

Fox 2's M.L. Elrick did a little reviewing of his own and found some interesting blemishes in the backgrounds.

On Wednesday night, Elrick talked about "his top five (or is it the bottom five) most colorful candidates for city council." They are David Bullock, Paula Humphries, Fred Durhal, Jr., Dustin Campbell and David Nathan.

Perhaps, the most serious blemishes involve Dustin Campbell.

In 2002,  Campbell was convicted in Florida of battery after he was arrested for assaulting a woman. The  police report says he "struck her several times on the head and the face with the gun." The woman later filed an affidavit asking officials to drop the charges.

Campbell pleaded no contest and adjudication was withheld, Elrick reports.  Before long, he was back in jail. After a feud with his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, police say Campbell "struck him with the front of his vehicle . . . the man went up in the air, landed on his hood, and ended up on the pavement."

A jury found Campbell guilty of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Nice.

Elrick will have more on the candidates tonight on Fox 2.
