The End Could Be Very Near for Nortland Mall

Northland Center in Southfield, one of the nation's first major suburban malls, could soon shut down.

Established in 1954, the once-popular mall is losing nearly $250,000 a month, JC Reindl of the Detroit Free Press reports.

The Freep writes that the mall defaulted on a $31-million loan last year, and its court-appointed receiver is seeking permission to evict the few remaining tenants and board up the property.

If the receiver is successful in court, the mall could close by late April or early May, the Freep reports.
