It's Howdy Doody Time at the DIA

February 26, 2015, 2:20 PM by  Allan Lengel

The legendary "Howdy Doody Show," which was a pioneer in children's television, ran from 1947 to 1960 on NBC. Howdy Doody was a freckle-faced boy marionette with 48 freckles.

Now, the Howdy Doody marionette, along with other famous puppets, will go on display beginning Friday, March 20 at the Detroit Institute of Arts in what the museum is calling "VIPS," or very important puppets. Other puppets will include two sets of historic puppets, an 18th-century Venetian comedia del arte (art comedy) cast and an American colonial era Punch and Judy.

The display will run through September 20.

The museum said Howdy Doody will  appear wearing his original cowboy boots and buckskin gloves.

The DIA said Howdy Doody hasn't been on display since 2009, the year the U.S. Postal Service stamp was created in his honor.
