Seventeen Metro Detroiters Charged in Interstate Jewelry Heist Ring

Seventeen people have been indicted in Metro Detroit in connection with orchestrating smash-and-grab jewelry heists across the country, federal authorities announced Friday.

Eric Lawrence of the Detroit Free Press reports the thieves hit stores in n New York, Maryland, North Carolina, Mississippi, Nebraska and Connecticut and stole Rolex watches.

The Freep writes:

Crews of thieves from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties hit jewelry stores during business hours in the various states, used sledge hammers to smash the Rolex display cases and hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of watches. With stolen vehicles waiting for the thieves to finish their heist, the crews brought their booty back to Michigan, a press release said.
