Too soon?

WDIV's Mara MacDonald reports that Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones is asking the city for raises for council members. City Clerk Janice Winfrey also wants a raise.

The request before the Detroit Elected Officials Compensation Commission comes just shortly after Detroit has emerged from bankruptcy.

WDIV reports that Detroit's  elected officials took a 10 percent pay cut in 2010. The council members, and Winfrey now earn $73,181 a year, plus they get a city-owned take-home car. Brenda Jones earns  $76,911 a year as president.

"We have just went through a historic bankruptcy proceeding," Jones said, according to a report in the Deroit Free Press.  "Our roles as council members, my role as council president, has changed tremendously. I don't know that there's any place you can even compare what we do today based on any other city council as we go through a plan of adjustment, as we have to abide by the plan of adjustment. There's just so many things that have changed tremendously."

Winfrey tells WDIV that she'd be happy if she could get back the 10 percent pay cut. She also said she doesn’t believe her salary should be tied or equivalent with what City Council members make because she oversees a $13 million budget and a large department.

Mayor Mike Duggan is not asking for a raise, WDIV reports.
