Detroit State Lawmaker Attacks Duggan and M-1 Rail

Rep. Rose Mary Robinson

Democratic state Rep. Rose Mary Robinson, a long-time Detroit resident who represents the city, doesn't have kind words for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan or the M-1 Rail.

Emily Lawler of MLive reports that Robinson, who appeared Thursday for the taping of the public television show, Off The Record with host Tim Skubick, said she wasn't a "big fan" of Duggan.

"It's just a carpetbagger to me. Ok? I mean, and all due respect to the Mayor if he's watching or he hears this. I mean this is the whole style of politics today if you have money you can do anything, you can move into a community and I think his view of the world is quite different from mine and how I perceive Detroit." Robinson said.

MLive writes that Robinson, an attorney and former Wayne County Commissioner, complains that Duggan is investing in Downtown and ignoring Detroit's other neighborhoods.

"I'm opposed to putting the resources into a little cul-de-sac of the city," Robinson said.

She also attacked the M-1 Rail, a 3.3 mile system that will run along Woodward Avenue.

"It's not fair. It's not fair to people. We got this -- oh, I was going to swear -- this trolley car that goes three miles, it's allegedly Detroit's rapid transit system. It doesn't move a single person from the city of Detroit from work or to church or to the doctor. Forty percent of the people in Detroit do not have cars. We need a rapid transit system, we need a good system and what do we get? This hype," Robinson said.

MLive reports that Robinson said the M-1 rail was only to service the "artificial community" downtown.

She went on to say the mayor needs to do more to address issues like poverty, unemployment and poor health.

Off The Record airs on WKAR on Fridays at 8:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 1:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
