Updated: Friday, 4:08 p.m. -- Anita Sevier, the wife of U.S. District Judge Terrence Berg, who was shot Thursday night during an attempted robbery outside his home in northwest Detroit,  told the Free Press:

"We just want people to know that this is not a reason to hate Detroit. Instead of being angry, be part of the solution for the hopeless teens and children of Detroit."

She stressed: "We don't want this to be a reason to hate."

Meanwhile, the FBI is offering a $25,000 reward in the case, the Freep reports.

From earlier today:

Detroit U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade, a former colleague of U.S. District Judge Terrence Berg, described the judge and former federal prosecutor as a hero for protecting his family during an attempted robbery at his northwest Detroit home Thursday in which he was shot in the leg.

"To those who know him, it comes as no surprise that Judge Berg risked his life to protect his family," McQuade told the Free Press. "He is a hero, and he willingly paid the price by suffering a serious gunshot wound."

Berg is expected to recover from the wound.

According to an account in the Free Press by staffers Tresa Baldas, Katrease Stafford, Gina Damron and Bill Laitner, Berg had just  brought back his garbage bins to his Detroit home in the University District around 7 Mile Road and Livernois around 9:10 p.m.  when two young men approached him from behind on his porch.

The Freep reports:

One of the men put a gun in his back and said, "Don't turn around. We don't want to hurt you, just let us inside."

Berg turned around, he was shot in the leg and then two men took off running.

Police drove him to the hospital.

The Freep reports that neighbors who rushed to his aide included an emergency room doctor, a lawyer and several others.

The FBI, Detroit Police and the U.S. Marshals Service, which is responsible for the safety of federal judges, is investigating, the Freep reports.
