Clinton Township Party Store Owner Killed; Second One in A Year

March 27, 2015, 3:40 PM

A Clinton Township party store owner was killed in a shootout during an attempted robbery late Thursday night.

Frank DeFrank of the Macomb Daily reports that a police manhunt continued Friday morning following the death of Emil Salem, 50, owner of Bernie’s Market on Garfield Road near 17 Mile Road.

The paper reports that  a man entered the store approximately 11:30 p.m. with a gun drawn as the store was closing. Salem also pulled out a weapon, and the two exchanged fire, police told the Macomb Daily.

“We don’t know who fired first,” Clinton Township police Capt. Richard Maierle said.

Police said the gunman suffered one or two gunshot wounds, police said.

After shooting the store owner, the security camera shows that the robber went to the office area of the store where the owner's 16-year-old year was. The door was locked and the man did not get in.

The slaying comes one year after another Clinton Township party store owner was slain.

Basim “Basil” Sulaka was killed March 28, 2014 during a robbery at the Moon Lite Party Store, the Macomb Daily noted.
