Troy City Council to interview City Manager candidates

Troy City Council will interview two prospective candidates to serve as acting city manager at a 6:30 meeting tonight.

At first glance, this is pretty basic stuff. However, nothing is simple in Troy right now.

Following an unexpectedly contentious fight over a long-planned Transit Center last year, Mayor Janice Daniels read into the City Council record a long “position paper” criticizing then-Manager John Szerlag for, among other things, allowing city employees to open city mail.

The controversy led Oakland County Executive Brooks Patterson to issue his own open letter defending Szerlag and applauding his long record of public service. Daniels is also facing a recall campaign.

For his part, Szerlag demonstrated his wisdom and experience by leaving behind the mess that is Troy politics for a new job in Florida.

Heaven help the poor soul who will replace him. – JW
