Fired Inkster cop William Melendez, who is shown in a video beating on motorist Floyd Dent in January during a traffic stop in Inkster, will face felony charges.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Monday that Melendez, a former Detroit cop who still works as a part time officer in Highland Park,  has been charged with two counts of assault to do great bodily harm, WDIV reports.

The Detroit News reports that Todd Perkins, the Highland Park city attorney, said Melendez won't return to active duty until the matter is resolved.

He also faces charges of mistreatment of a prisoner and misconduct in office.

At the same time, Worthy announced that a cocaine possession charge against Dent were being dropped. Dent claimed the cop had planted the evidence during the traffic stop.

The incident first came to light when Local 4 Defenders showed a video of the beating.
