Drinking Game: 'A Comeback City That's Seizing Its 2nd Chance'

April 20, 2015, 2:42 PM by  Alan Stamm

Our new Revive Detroit Drinking Game may be too easy.

Just four days after a cliché-filled Microscoft News post from Seattle, a newspaper on the opposite coast drives us to drink again. "Financial struggles can't slow Detroit's energy and creativity" says the headline. "A thriving art scene is helping Detroit regain its luster as it rebounds from financial disaster," adds a caption.

To be clear: We welcome attention to the DIA, MOCAD and Heidelberg. No question they're assets in our city and region. We'd just like a more sober approach to coverage than this: "The spirit of Detroit is alive and well."

Instead (grab a glass), Grace Bello at the Daily News in New York serves up these in a Sunday travel article:

  • Detroit "has transformed into . . . a comeback city that’s seizing its second chance."
  • "Bankrupt, schmankrupt. Nothing stops Detroit!"
  • "Detroit’s creative and entrepreneurial energy surrounds you."
  • "Opportunities abound. Everywhere you look are new developments and ambitious ventures."
  • "Thanks to the legendary Slows Bar BQ, other eateries have moved in and transformed the area" of Corktown.

We're glad Bello is impressed by what she saw or read (no quotes, so can't tell if she came). It's just that her gushing about the city "seizing its second chance" leaves us seizing a second shot.
