Elrick: Cushingberry Keeps Voters in The Dark on Donors

April 21, 2015, 6:39 AM

Watching M.L. Elrick on Fox 2 go after Detroit City Councilman George Cushingberry time after time, it's clear Cushingberry doesn't feel he has to answer to the electorate.

Cushingberry regularly dodges Elrick's questions. This time it's about campaign finance.

Elrick reports that Cushingberry has failed to file his campaign finance reports to show where he got his campaign contributions from.

Elrick reports that Cushingberry owes state and local authorities nearly $30,000 in penalties for failing to let the public know where he gets his money. Again, Cushingberry declined to answer any questions from Fox 2.

Elrick reports that he confronted two council member, Gabe Leland and Scott Benson, who also failed to file reports.

However, Elrick reports that Leland told him he would file his overdue report, and shortly after that, he did.

Elrick reports that Councilman Benson also filed some delinquent campaign finance reports after he caught up with him outside city hall.

"There's been a lot of things going on. sometimes those things fall by the wayside, and I'm glad that you've been able to remind me to do them," Benson said.

Elrick reports that Benson said he filed the ones for his state campaign even though the Secretary of State said they're still incomplete. The Secretary of State says Benson owes more than $3,000 in fines, Fox 2 reports.
