Ray Kurzweil

If you get the impression that Ray Kurzweil burns through a lot of brain cells everyday, you'd be pretty right on.

Kurzweil, inventor, best selling author and futurist, is Director of Engineering at Google, and heads up a team developing machine intelligence and natural language understanding. He thinks a lot about the future and what will be in the world of technology.

On Tuesday morning, Kurzweil was the key speaker at the Society of Automotive Engineers 2015 World Congress & Exhibition that runs through Thursday at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit.

Kurzweil talked about printing from 3-D printers and the future of our brains and computers. He says eventually our brains will be hooked up directly to computers. Right now, he says, we have to interface with computers using our hands, ears and eyes.

For full disclosure, I'm friends with Kurzweil. His brother-in-law is a close friend.

Any how, Kurzweil also went on to talk about the future of cars, how they'll be safer and self driving and self diagnosing. When they're broken, they'll pull off the road and get fixed. People will also be able to utilize their time better when the car is driving itself.

He also predicts new business models for cars.

"People will still buy cars, but the Uber-type model, with the self driving cars will become very popular. Right now, most of our cars are sitting doing nothing most of the time... So we should share cars."

"So having fleets of cars driving around, and come and get you when you need them, kind of the Uber concept,  I think that model will grow substantially when we have autonomous vehicles."
