Detroit's Curbside Recycling Program Not Very Successful So Far

April 22, 2015, 7:14 AM

The concept of recycling garbage in Detroit isn't going over so big since the city first started offering curbside pickup last March when it turned to a privatized trash system.

Keith Matheny of the Detroit Free Press reports that one year after the program began, it remains largely unused. Only about 10% of residents who could participate have, city officials tell the Freep.

"A lot of people still don't realize we have curbside recycling available to us now — I got in an argument about it with another city resident the other day who was convinced it wasn't true," Sandra Turner-Handy,  community outreach director with the nonprofit Michigan Environmental Council, tells the Freep. She puts her recyclables out on the city's east side.

The Freep goes on to report that some may not be participating because of the one-time $25 cost for a container for the service.
