This comes as no surprise.
Susan Tompor of the Detroit Free Press reports that Michigan drivers pay the highest insurance premiums in the country, according to a report by insuranceQuotes.com.
The reports says Michigan drivers pay 136% above, or more than double, the national average of $815 a year, the Freep reports. And Wayne County is the most expensive county in Michigan, with average car insurance costs pegged at $2,789 a year.
Tompor writes that news comes as state lawmakers debate a fast-track, potential overhaul of Michigan's no-fault auto insurance system that would create a new version of the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association but keep Michigan's unique system of unlimited benefits for those who suffer serious crash injuries costing more than $545,000.
The legislation, Tompor reports, calls for other limits or caps.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan also announced last week that he soon plans to unveil a new insurance program for Detroiters that result in more affordable premiums.
