Monday, 11:55 a.m. update:  Dr. Ben Carson, a native of Detroit, who lives in Maryland, officially announced his candidacy for Republican presidential nomination this morning at Detroit Music hall,  Chad Livengood writes in The Detroit News

He seeks the Republican nomination as the only black candidate ifor either party.

At the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on Monday morning, he said:

"We have to get back to the point where we are not ashamed of being people of faith. It doesn't mean that we force our beliefs on anybody else. But no one should be able to curtail what we say and what we do and how we believe

Original article:

Detroit's own, Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurogsurgeon who has become a darling among some conservative Republicans, said Sunday he'll be announcing his bid for the presidency in 2016, Politico reports.

Carson made the announcement in a television interview with Sinclair Broadcasting ahead of his formal campaign kickoff event, still scheduled for Monday in Detroit, Politico reports.

For the country, it may not be much to get excited about.

Terry Mulcahy and Katie Glueck of Politico report:

Sitting next to her husband at the Detroit Music Hall for the announcement rehearsal, Candy Carson deadpanned: “I think the country is probably more excited than we are.”

Carson gained attention, and began to draw interest from the conservative wing of the Republican Party, after his appearance at the National Prayer Breakfast in 2013, where he chided President Barack Obama over the Affordable Care Act.

Carson has not gone unnoticed in recent months either: He recently ripped into ‘’selfie’’ culture and even drew the ire of Vice President Biden after he postulated that being gay was “a choice.” “A lot of people who go into prison straight, and when they come out they’re gay,” he had told CNN’s New Day host Chris Cuomo.
