Metro Detroit Police Stations Offer Safe Havens for Craigslist Transactions

May 04, 2015, 7:12 AM

To prevent rip-offs and robberies, some Metro Detroit police departments will be encouraging people to conduct Craigslist and other website transactions in their stations, The Detroit News reports.

Sterling Heights recently announced that Craigslist users and other online buyers can use the Police Department’s lobby and parking lot for transactions, and Southfield and Ferndale will soon offer that option, Kyla Smith reports that.  Troy police also recently announced their station is an online transaction safe zone.

Detroit Police don't formally offer the stations.

Robert Stevenson, executive director of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, tells The News:

“This a lot better than meeting someone in a parking lot in the middle of the night. Many police stations are even putting in ATMs for safety reasons.”
