Home invasions in Detroit have become all too common. And increasingly it has become more common to hear homeowners shooting the invaders.

That's what apparently happened Monday morning after a home invasion suspect was fatally shot by a homeowner during a gun exchange, the Detroit News reports. The homeowner was hospitalized with gunshot wounds, Holly Fournier of The Detroit News reports.

The News reports that the suspect, 45, forced the homeowner's 30-year-old girlfriend into the house at gunpoint around 12:20 a.m. on the 14900 block of Liberal, near Hayes and East State Fair streets, police said.

"The homeowner armed himself with a weapon and exchanged gunfire" with the suspect, Sgt. Cassandra Lewis tells the paper.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig has made previous statements encouraging law-abiding citizens to arm themselves.
