'Clever' vs. 'Trash:' Readers Chime in on Edgy Detroit Shirts

May 04, 2015, 8:02 PM by  Alan Stamm

If you want to wear your sense of  humor on your chest, a downtown shop has just the thing in five sizes for men and women.

The $25 shirt above and the pair at right are from I Am Detroit, which has a store at 450 W. Fort St. downtown (same building as the legendary Anchor Bar) and which also takes online orders.

Dozens of styles and messages are offered, though these catch our eye for some reason.

Well, ladies -- are they? (Oh wait, now we do it too.)

This four-year-old small business professes lofty values at its About web page:

We love our city and everything that it is. . . . I Am Detroit is a Locally Designed and Manufactured Clothing Company, looking to show the positive side of Detroit.

Creating a positive look at our great Motor City.

Really now, is that so?

We try not to seem humorless or comedy-impaired. What's clever to one person can be crass to another, as we're reminded regularly from reactions to our mirth missteps.

So we wondered how social media followers would see these in-your-face wardrobe choices. Below are comments from our Facebook and Twitter communities to Monday morning posts with the her-and-his photo above. The near-even split is 9 in favor, 13 opposed.

Our favorite replies are from Canton real estate agent Jessica Gomez and Iram Ali of Washington, D.C., sharp-eyed punctuation purists who spot a backwards apostrophe on the women's shirts.
