The last time former Pistons star Isiah Thomas ran a basketball team in New York, things didn't turn out so great.

Well, he's back.

Harvey Araton of the New York Times reports that Thomas has been named president of the WNBA team, the New York Liberty, with an ownership stake.

The Times reports:

Without public knowledge, Thomas had been serving as an adviser to the Liberty in recent months, and he said in a telephone interview that he had been instrumental in the January reinstatement of Coach Bill Laimbeer, his former teammate with the Detroit Pistons, whose contract had not been renewed after last season.

Thomas added that he also was involved in the hirings of the longtime Knicks assistant coach Herb Williams in a similar role and of Teresa Weatherspoon, who starred on the early Liberty teams of the late 1990s, as director of player development.
