Insanity is probably a good word for this story.

Fox 2 reports that a Macomb Township family went on a trip to Canada and unknowingly ran up a bill for roaming cell phone charges of  $17,476.99.

Dave Spencer of Fox 2 spoke to Mike Domzalski, who said while the family was driving to Toronto, the son, 11, watched videos on his iPad, not realizing he was racking up some serious roaming charges.  The charges were linked to Domzalski's work cell phone.

"It was an innocent trip," said Domzalski. "We had never been to Toronto. It was something different."

"They want to charge me $17,000," he told Fox 2. "I just think it's insanity. (I'm) more than willing to pay what the actual rate would be. A couple hundred dollars but this is like buying a brand new car for a roaming charge."

"(He was) watching YouTube videos in the U.S. and once we got to Canada, over the bridge he couldn't get a signal at all," Domzalski said.

"For $17,000 he never even saw anything," Domzalski told Fox 2.  "The screen went blank and there was no connection for the whole time we were getting billed."

AT&T responded to the story:

"Because the data was downloaded outside of the U.S., International rates apply.  In  this case it was more than five hours of continuous data usage.  We encourage people to enroll in our international plan."
