Update: Detroit Blocks '8 Mile' Showing Over Safety Problems at Garage Site

May 30, 2015, 12:50 PM

Saturday, 12:50 p.m.: We belatedly spot (thanks to reader Mike Kline) a Friday night post by Free Press music man Brian McCollum that changes a planned freebie:
A planned screening of Eminem's "8 Mile" at Detroit's Michigan Theater has been postponed to address concerns of city building inspectors.

The scheduled Saturday showing will now likely happen in June, said Eric Novack of Boydell Group, which owns the 89-year-old building.

Compliance issues include accessible exits, the reporter says.

Original article (aka "never mind"):

Sure, you saw "8 Mile" -- perhaps more than once in the 13 years since the iconic Detroit film's release. But here's a chance to watch it at a site that's in the movie, as Kirk Pinho blogs at Crain's:

On Saturday, you’ll can watch Eminem’s “8 Mile” in the parking garage that once was the opulent Michigan Theatre.

One of the rap battle scenes in the 2002 biopic starring Detroit native Eminem as “Rabbit” was filmed in the former theater, built in 1925 by John Kunsky and opening in 1926. It has also been featured in “Transformers: Age of Extinction.”

A local businessman who bought the landmark last year, Dennis Kefallinos’ of Niki’s Pizza, stages the free screening at 9 p.m. May 30 for fans who're at least 18. Heads-up: There are no seats, so bring a folding chair or stool.

Beverages and food, including pizza, will be sold.
