Birmingham Moves Ahead With Controversial Lane Reduction on Maple

June 02, 2015, 7:52 AM

The reduction of four lanes to three lanes on Maple Road between Southfield and Cranbrook roads has become quite controversial.

Some residents feel the reduction will only exacerbate traffic problems.

Birmingham City Commissioners don't agree, and on Monday night voted to move forward with plans, WXYZ reports, by implementing a six-month pilot plan before repaving the road for good.

Tthe goal is to reduce accident rates on the busy stretch of road, make it more pedestrian-friendly, reduce the average speed and make it easier to make turns.

Some residents feel it will only make traffic worse and encourage motorists to cut through residential areas during rush hour.
