The Oakland County Sheriff's Office has a message: Don't do what this guy did.

A man found a live, military-style hand grenade while helping a wife of a recently deceased friend clean out her garage, John Turk of The Oakland Press reports. The deceased friend was a World War II veteran.

The man brought the explosive to the Oakland Sheriff's substation in Brandon Township at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday

The substation and a few surrounding businesses were evacuated as a result, the paper says. The grenade was left in the man’s car.

The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad came and secured the explosive. State Police Lt. Michael Shaw tells the paper any grenades should be left alone so authorities can respond when notified.
