Corrections: The pop-up dates for the dinners mistakenly said June 7 and June 8. The dates are Aug. 7 and Aug. 8.

The original story also stated that Vera Devera is from the Kalamazoo area. She is from California. Her boyfriend is originally from Kalamazoo.

Most pop-up dinners have a good story behind them. This one goes like this:

San Francisco-based Canvas Underground, a secret supper club, hosts two meals here this weekend: One in Hamtramck on Friday and another in Ferndale on Saturday, Laura Cassar of Crain's Detroit Business reports.

How did this come about?

Executive chef-owner Peter Jackson and his Canvas Underground team have been hosting the dinners in San Francisco for years, Crain's writes.

The team's San Francisco hostess and event coordinator, Vera Devera, who hails from California, moved to Ferndale last fall with her boyfriend,  Craig Dalrymple, 43, who is originally from the Kalamazoo area. They wanted to share their passion about food, and talked Jackson into visiting Metro Detroit and hosting a couple pop-up dinners, Crain's reports.

"We aren't new pioneers who think we are here to save Detroit. We are just two people who belong here," Dalrymple told Crain's.
