Is Protest Over Mosque Really About Traffic or Religion?

August 31, 2015, 7:29 AM

Some of folks who protested on Saturday against the proposed construction of a mosque in Sterling Heights say it's not about religion, but rather about extra traffic and changing the character of a residential neighborhood.

But there may be room for questions about some who say it's not about religion, or specifically, Islam.

Take Debbi Rrosi.

“I want to be clear, I’m not against mosques, I’m just against the location it’s in,” Rrosi, who lives across the street from the proposed development, told Jameson Cook of the  Macomb Daily. “This is a residential area. We want to keep it that way. …It’s not about religion.”

But she added that the mosque doesn’t belong in the middle of a mostly Christian, Catholic residential community.

“They want to build a mosque in the heart of a Christian community, does that make sense to anybody?” she told the Macomb Daily.  “Why?”

Mmmmm.

The city's planning commission is set to meet Sept. 10 to consider the rezoning required to build the mosque.
