'Rent Is Cheap' Detroit Listing Near Eastern Market Is a Craigslist Spoof

August 31, 2015, 8:19 PM by  Alan Stamm

Here's a residential property we won't see at Homestyle, Michigan House Envy, Hour Detroit or Curbed Detroit.

It's an exclusive -- or elusive -- home-rental description posted at Craigslist by someone calling himself Chris. He spoofs the site's anything-goes vibe, the hype of real estate listings anywhere and seven of Detroit's "soft neighborhoods."

This "charming urban cottage" has no laundry room, driveway, garage or utilities. "Rent is cheap."

"Charming Off Grid Urban Cottage (Detroit)," says the heading for the three-bedroom, two-bath charmer (right) with 1,750 square feet.

The text -- which helpfully confirms "no laundry on site" and "street parking" -- tells what a tenant gets for $300 a month and is accompanied by four photos.

This lovely little abode is nestled just beside Eastern Market. Water, electricity and gas have been disconnected to give you that authentic lumberjack rugged man of the woods experience that you have always dreamed of, while keeping all the amenities of the city close by.

Forget about Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, Southwest, Hubbard Farms, Woodbridge, Indian Village, or an of those soft neighborhoods. If Thoreau were to move to Detroit, this is where he would stay.

Patch your own roof, fix your own stairs, grow your own food, catch your own water, and capture rats and cats for protein!

Rent is cheap. . . . Serious inquiries only.

Lest anyone still doubt this is a send-up, but the contact number "Chris" lists is for Belle Isle's Disc Golf Course.

Hat tip to Brian Ambrozy of Detroit for tweeting the link Monday afternoon.
