In an Hour, 2 Big Spenders Show Spartan Loyalty With Lots of Green

October 29, 2015, 6:01 PM

There are lots of wealthy Spartan super-fanatics. That's clear from generous bidding on a pair of  collectible pigskins that are going, going, gone in auctions ending at 7 p.m. tonight.

The prizes are two Nike Vapor One footballs used Oct. 17 during the Spartans’ 27-23 stunning victory over Michigan after a Wolverine fumble in the last minutes. They're autographed by head coach Mark Dantonio and have referee marking to verify use.

As of late afternoon, the two online auctions have 245 bids at a MSU sports site (link below). One ball is at $6,305 and the other rose to $6,255 a little while ago. Bids climb in increments of at least $5.

Interest in the costly mementoes surged during the past two days. One ball was at $1,750 on Tuesday afternoon, The Detroit News reported then in a three-paragraph item.

The university also is peddling a program from that game, also signed by Dantonio. It's at $700 after 55 bids.

Any or all of the sales could run past the schedule closing time if determined fans place bids at or shortly after 6:57 p.m. Thursday. "The auction will be automatically extended for an additional three minutes from the time of the latest bid," say the rules. "This auction will close once all bidding activity has stopped for a period of three minutes."

The sale is managed for MSU by CBS Interactive Advanced Media, which says it "helps our partners protect and build their brands by deepening and expanding their following."
