Dickerson: New Proposed Road Bill Is 'Dishonest' and 'Reckless'

Free Press columnist Brian Dickerson doesn't mince words when it comes to state lawmakers' proposed bill to fix our crumbling roads.

He writes:

There’s a little more haggling ahead, but Michigan’s Republican legislative majority is poised to send Gov. Rick Snyder a road-funding plan that violates virtually everything Michigan’s accountant-in-chief purports to stand for.

It’s dishonest, committing the state to pay billions of dollars with tax revenues that do not yet exist and may never materialize.

It’s fiscally reckless, threatening to blow a new $800-million hole in a discretionary budget that has already been slashed by a third in real dollars since the 1990s.

And it’s cowardly, reserving the hardest public policy choices for lawmakers who won’t take office until most of this year’s incumbents have surrendered their term-limited seats.
